Why is the Twelfth House so fascinating?

A couple of days ago, I shared my friend and colleague Christina Rodenberg’s fine post Twelfth House People on my Astrology: Questions and Answers Facebook Page, where it attracted a good deal of attention and quite a few additional feedback comments, vividly illustrating people’s experiences of the elusive, mysterious Twelfth House. What is it about this House which so challenges and fascinates people?

The response to Christina’s post, both on her site and on my Facebook Page, has inspired me to repost the essay I wrote a few years ago on that very topic. I hope you enjoy reading it, and that it helps you to re-frame in a more contemporary, more positive light, your responses to that most elusive place in space.

“…I have had many very powerful, affirming and moving responses to my recent article/essay “Contemplating the Twelfth House: an optimist’s take on self-undoing”, which has now been published three times, first of all by the USA’s Mountain Astrologer (summer 2014) then by the UK’s Astrological Journal (spring 2015) and most recently by the world’s most popular astrology website  www.astro.com:

  1. Talking about what is indescribable as the 12th house energy (Saturn- Capricorn, Uranus- Aquarius and Neptune- Pisces ) leaves me speechless, Anne! Thank you for this very inspiring article about your very personal experiences and your natal chart !!! I am in my midlife awakening now and discover all my 12 house energies I have got, too! A gift of a special type to just now learn Astrology in a deep level…Love and light from Sabine

    • You are most welcome, Sabine. Glad you found what I have to say about the Twelfth House inspiring – it’s a distillation of a lifetime’s personal experience and reflection…blessings as you go through your midlife awakening!

      • Thank you, Anne, for sharing this quite difficult stuff for something metaphysical which cannot be expressed in any language clearly because it is simply not existing in reality…But one can understand only, when antenna is receptive, that is not in early lifetime, but later in the second half of life – or never for most!!! So I am very thankful that I discovered this world behind our earthy being. For your information, I have in my chart all personal planets in 2nd and 3rd house, but Pluto, Uranus and Neptune in 4th Quarter, house 10 and 12. So my very physical, earthbound Capricorn nature is paired with the metaphysical, highly spiritual energy of 10 (Pluto and Uranus in Virgin) & 12 house (Neptune in Scorpio). Important for me to understand my escape from times into the outbound dreamy and now even more spiritual world. Thanks again for sharing your private experiences with me. From my heart sent – Sabine

  2. Thank you so much, Sabine. I wrote the essay to help other people – as well as myself – to develop a perspective on the Twelfth House which freed them up to be more true to their hidden selves. Our materialist, reductionist culture is completely blind and deaf to those subtle dimensions of life which cannot be measured statistically but which have had such a profound influence on human culture since very ancient times. Those of us deeply connected to the hidden dimensions need to speak out from time to time, I feel!

I have planets in the 12th – not as many thank goodness – with a Virgo rising. Life has been H___ for decades for me too but we are nearly out of the tunnel and some other people can have their turns.

  4. Well, Julie, the period I described was ten years ago and many riches have flowed from it since then. So, take heart!

I also have a packed 12th. It’s a very different path then most people. I feel at peace with it now.

Being a twelfth house person too- although opposite to you Anne with my planets in Aquarius -it has taken me years to understand what it means for me. I have come to understand that it is about learning to let go of any attachments and trying to be in the moment, having faith in the universe that I am where I’m meant to be. Similarly, enjoying my own space and peace to potter without interference from the outside World. I certainly found the transits of Neptune and Uranus through the twelfth to be difficult, confusing and chaotic times. I’m hoping I’m in a position to work with Saturn more consciously second time around, once it’s completed it’s journey through Capricorn. I’m not going to have any expectations. More learning!

  8. Many thanks indeed for this thoughtful feedback, Amron. I’m sure it will help other 12th House folk to come to terms with this most challenging – but eventually rewarding – of places…

I really loved this, I personally don’t have any planets in my 12th house, and I’ve in some ways struggled with understanding the 12th (your article really helps), and also struggled with Neptune and Pisces energy. Pisces is intercepted in my 1st house (Placidus), Neptune is too nicely placed in my chart (no difficult aspects) and Capricorn is on the cusp of my 12th. Also thank you for being open about your experiences, it helps exceedingly in understanding. During that time around 2002-2008ish (Neptune in Aquarius) was absolute pure awful confusing hell for me. My Ascendant is in Aquarius and lots of planets in Leo and Scorpio…I had several mental breakdowns, many identity crises, addiction worsening problems, and severe financial issues (well I’ve always had that). And about 2-3 years ago my progressed Moon went through my 12th, which was a life changer. I also funnily enough moved out here to Tasmania nearly a year and a half ago (near the end of my progressed Moon in the 12th), and my relocation chart is very interesting…Sun/Uranus, Venus, Pluto, and North Node are all in the 12th…this freaked me out a bit, but I think I’m beginning to understand better, and your article has also given me a lot to think about. I will also say there have really been only two places where I feel I need to be, and Tasmania is one of them. I also wanted to ask about your writing project you mentioned in your article, the paranormal and bringing together the scientific/mystic/symbolic/myth, did you publish a book or make this public or I’m just really interested to read this since this is exactly my interest too, and I also am completely fascinated by the paranormal and psychic phenomenon and love hearing in-depth personal accounts (I remember you mentioned a bit in another article…I’m realising this is getting really long and I could keep going…anyway, thanks, oh and a side note just because, I also have my Moon at 19 degrees Leo 🙂

  10. Emilie, thanks so much for this most interesting and very personal response; so glad my writing on the 12th House has helped you get to grips with it ( if such a term should even be used in relation to 12 H insubstantiality!!) . Yes, I’d clocked with great interest when I visited your site ( https://www.els0337.com/) that we have an exact 19 Leo Moon conjunction! “Wisps from the Dazzling Darkness” has been on sale as an ebook since 2015 – if you email me I’ll send you a freebee. All good wishes,Anne

This was really interesting as I’ve a stellium in Aries in the 12th and all my personal planets are in the 12th. What a read thank you!

The twelfth house rules the subconscious mind, dreams, intuition, instinct, and secrets
A little-known fact is that all large animals come under the domain of the twelfth house. The twelfth house is ruled by spiritual and self-sacrificing Neptune and by compassionate Pisces.
