TreeHouse interviews astrologer, writer and blogger Anne Whitaker

TH: What initially drove you to create the Astrology: Questions and Answers site at http://www.annewhitaker.com?

AW: Answering questions about astrology is something I have done both for my students and for myself for a very long time! Then a couple of years ago, I was invited to run an astrology blog from a popular local site here in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. I thought it would be fun to call it  Astrology: Questions and Answers, since by this time my astrological writings on Writing from the Twelfth House were attracting various kinds of correspondence via comments and emails from readers. Inevitably, questions were a big part! The local site proved too limiting, so I set up my own Astrology: Questions and Answers blog.

A Scorpio asks: ” How do I help my deepening spiritual life along?”

Allegra’s is a very reflective, intense, sensitive and profound question to which I am not sure I can do justice in this context. However, I will try! If any readers are able or willing to add to my words in a way they think will be encouraging to Allegra (not her real name) , they are most welcome to do so via a comment.

“….I was hoping you could answer a few questions for me. I am finally making great strides in my spiritual walk and I need some direction. First, I’ve been meditating, praying and consciously accepting positive energy.  I once struggled with the idea of controlling my world, and now I am letting the universe flow through me. Lately, since I’ve been listening to myself and able to receive energy I’ve been experiencing very intense, very dense spiritual downloads. They come in the form of words, visions, dreams and feelings.  Problems I’ve been trying to solve and sort out for years are so clear suddenly.  I love this new connection I’m experiencing, but I would like to continue to grow it and keep receiving these solutions, and information and soothing comforting energy.

Any suggestions?  The visions are vivid and so profound and I’ve noticed they often happen when I’m either in the dark, or in warm water.  I’m an 11/06/1981 scorpio.

Any wisdom you could share with me would be greatly appreciated.  I would love to learn how to live in unison with this great power and use it wisely and respectfully…”

Allegra- Sunrise Horoscope

Allegra- Sunrise Horoscope

Dear Allegra

it is perhaps appropriate – given your deep, dark Scorpio Sun –  that I too am in the dark: in the sense that I do not know you, have no idea how much if any astrology you know beyond the popular, limited Sun Sign astrology, and do not have your birth time or place. However, I have put up a horoscope for you for Sunrise on your day of birth. This puts all the other nine planetary characters on the stage with the Sun, giving me a reasonable idea of which ones are to the fore on the stage of your life at present.

Given that this is a public reply, and that I do not do detailed horoscope readings on my blog, I am focusing purely on those characters. And there is plenty to focus on!

It will help you to follow my analysis if you think of the planets in the heavens at the moment as your play’s Directors. The main Director in your case at this time is Neptune, planet of spiritual longing and very often, psychic sensitivity: openness to those levels of Reality which the reductionists tell us do not exist – but which many of us have experienced over millennia and continue to do so to this day. The sensitivity, openness and compassion which Neptune brings is both a great gift and somewhat of a burden. Sensitivity needs nurturing, care and protection from too much harshness and stress if Neptune’s gifts are gradually to be fully realised

There is a very gifted, complex pattern in your horoscope involving Pluto, planet of power, Jupiter, planet of higher learning and Mercury, planet of information-gathering and communication. All these together in the sign of Libra make you a powerful teacher, traveller, communicator and writer in the pursuit of balance and justice. They are all positively linked with your Moon, planet of emotional receptivity and of the great Feminine principle in all its aspects. The Moon’s placing in the compassionate and empathic sign of Pisces naturally aligns with the planet Neptune, the main Director of your life’s play at this time.

For the last few years, Neptune has been gradually, continuously whispering to those characters that a more spiritual direction is what your deeper Self requires. This kind of call can be quite disruptive to one’s ‘ordinary’ life, but has a way of being insistent in altering one’s direction, over time. From the Spring of 2011, I would imagine Neptune’s influence has gradually become stronger, added to practical and realistic Saturn’s challenge to your Sun in Scorpio, especially in the autumn and winter of 2013, to seriously re-define your life.

So – everything you describe in your message to me makes sense, fits where your deeper Self needs to be and what that Self wishes to explore and develop at this time. All I really need to do is affirm that you are already doing what YOU need to do! Your respect for the ‘great power’ you describe is evident in the way you have written about your current experiences. With time, wisdom in the way in which you are meant to use it will open up. Be patient! The deeper Self usually has a different timescale and a slower rate of process than our impatient Ego would wish….

In the meantime, here are a few suggestions:

Make sure to develop a regular and steady spiritual practice, centred round meditation, contemplation, prayer and reading of material which inspires and supports you. Books like Jack Kornfields After the ecstasy, the laundry spoke to me very powerfully at a time of intense spiritual journeying. Try to take ‘time out’ for this practice each day if you can.

Keep a journal, make art, music – use your creative gifts to work with the powerful process you describe. Write out your dreams and visions if it feels right to do so. If you do this consistently you will see an unfolding developmental thread when you look back which may not be obvious at the time of writing.

If you can find a spiritual companion to meet with regularly, someone with whom you can discuss your deep experiences, who has been through their own profound journey to the Underworld and back and who can help you gradually find your new direction, that would be helpful. I had such a person for a long time and now have a ‘spiritual friend’ with whom to share inner experiences that many people do not have and most people do not wish to know about – I find it very helpful!

And finally, but most important of all: trust the Unseen to guide you on your path.

I do hope what I have written helps you – and any other spiritual seekers along the way who may read this post.

Blessings

Anne

Summer Solstice Greetings!

I’ve just posted a lovely image and enigmatic, atmospheric Summer Solstice quotation from Rabindranath Tagore, one of my favourite poets. Reflect and enjoy!

Are you feeling the pull of Neptune Retrograde?

I’m feeling extremely Neptunian today, as Neptune settles into its retrograde phase. Very spacy – not like my usual fairly grounded self. It’s a good day for creative writing, and I have a new project into which to sink: the metaphor would have to be watery, wouldn’t it?!

The mystical planet Neptune turned retrograde at 7.5 degrees of its own sign of Pisces yesterday, 9th June at 14.00 GMT, not turning direct again until mid-November. This is a subtle, deep time for all inner, reflective, imaginative, spiritual work. Take up meditation, writing poetry, listening to music: pay more attention than you normally would, to the hidden currents of your inner world, and see what comes to you as the months pass.

In the meantime, here is a beautiful evening image of the sea, Neptune’s realm…

…if you have any feedback to leave, concerning how Neptune’s retrograde turning this week is affecting you or yours, I’d love to hear from you. I’ve just been inspired – once the piece of work this week stimulated by Neptune is done – to go back through my diary for the last three years to research whether  I had as strong a reaction on previous occasions.

Watch this space! I’ll be reporting back.

What were you doing when Mars went direct this week?

Last Tuesday 20th May 2014, the planet Mars turned direct at 9 degrees of Libra. Did anything of particular interest, correlating with this shift, occur on that day, which any readers would like to share? If so, I’d love you to leave some feedback via a comment on this post.

I’m very interested in what correlations there are between planets turning retrograde or direct, on particular days at particular degrees of the zodiac, and corresponding inner/outer events in the lives of those of us directly ‘plugged in’ to those degrees.

Here is my feedback, which beautifully illustrates how planetary energies reflect both the positive and negative dimensions of our lives, often at the same time.

Transiting Mars turned direct – conjunct my natal second house Neptune at 9 degrees of Libra – on Tuesday 20th May. On the one hand, I encountered three inspirational women poets whilst attending a poetry reading with a fourth one. I also bought five poetry books by those three poets!

On the other hand, I came down on my return home with a sudden nasty urinary infection and spent the next day lying in bed waiting for the antibiotics to kick in.Then whilst recovering at home the day after that, I wrote two poems, the first I have written for thirty-four years…..

Observing the vividness of planetary symbolism accurately reflecting the patterns of our unfolding lives continues to be a source of enduring fascination for me. How about you?

The Cardinal Grand Cross – astrology as a healing and a wounding art

Commentaries are piling up throughout the astro-blogosphere. Angst-ridden people with greater or lesser degrees of astrological knowledge are winding  themselves up. What will the impact on our lives be, as the dramatic  Grand Cross pattern builds up in the heavens to its point of exactitude on 23rd/24th April 2014 ? To see what’s building up collectively, just read the papers. Political turmoil across the world, disasters on air and sea – these are just for starters…

Fasten your seat belts! Mercury is reversing…..

Why have I been feeling S-L-E-E-PY all day today? Could Mercury turning retrograde tonight at 21.38 UK Time, conjunct Neptune, have anything to do with it, I wonder?

Gorgeous Mercury

Mercury – Gorgeous or what?!

Help, however, is at hand. Fellow Scottish astrologer Anna Estaroth has kindly shared a link for a 2014 Mercury retrograde periods calendar with us on Facebook. Plan your times for slowing down, re-visiting, re-linquishing, re-storing, re-working, re-connecting….anything needing going over and sorting out (get down to doing those accounts from last year, freelancers out there!) can productively be addressed during Mercury retro periods. Go for it!!

What are the major planetary events of 2016? Question answered here!

Just when I was thinking of putting together a list of 2016’s major astrological events I’ve found the list of those very events on Leah Whitehorse’s excellent site, Lua Astrology. Many thanks, Leah, for compiling this key for us. I will certainly be printing it off and keeping it beside me for reference for the rest of the year.

Here is the link:

And ” What does it all mean?” is sure to be the next question. Well, astrology students out there, go and work it out for yourselves! If you want some help in doing so, there are many excellent astrology sites who will be reflecting from varying perspectives, on what the complex planetary picture for 2016 is likely to symbolise for us at both a collective and a personal level.

“Astrological” twins: do they exist ?

Linda’s Question:

Submitted on 2013/06/27 at 5:43 pm
I’ve always found twins fascinating. What’s even more fascinating is the kind of relationship that develops between people who aren’t blood relatives of any sort, yet seem to be “cut from the same cloth”. We talk about being “simpatico” – has anyone ever done any studies on such people to see if there are similarities in their charts?

My Answer:

Well, most regular practitioners of astrology do this kind of research at least informally as part of both their work and their own lives.

For example, I used to wonder why most of my close friends and associates, work colleagues and bosses were Sun Virgos, Pisceans and Aquarians. Then I had my horoscope drawn up.

I found that a key axis in the horoscope, ie the Ascendant/Descendant which describes how you meet the world, the persona you present to that world, and key relationships you draw to you – was in the signs of Virgo and Pisces. Thus quite unconsciously I was drawing to me relationships with people whose solar energies symbolically complemented my own….

Furthermore, the sign opposite to Leo in the zodiac wheel is Aquarius, and you know the old saw about opposites attracting!

Time and again I have known marriage/relationship partnerships where one person is Sun Leo and the other Aquarius, or vice versa.  Or Sun Taurus and Sun Scorpio. Or Sun Capricorn and Sun Cancer. And so on, all round the opposite pairs in the Zodiac circle. I am married to an Aquarian, and his Aquarian brother also has a Sun Leo wife – so we are one small illustration of this!

Also, when I got around to drawing family horoscopes, I discovered my father and mother both had Virgo as their Ascending signs. My brother and sister both have the sign of Virgo strongly emphasised in their horoscopes. My husband has a Virgo Ascendant, as does my (Sun in Pisces) stepson, and my stepson’s stepfather, who used to be married to my sister (work that one out….)

Any set of family horoscopes has similar variations on key themes, where the planetary placements and the zodiac signs in which they fall symbolically tell a vivid story of interweaving energy patterns, both clashing, compulsive and harmonious – as in life lived out.

Furthermore, in nearly twenty years of teaching astrology classes to a very wide range of students ranging in occupation from bus drivers to consultant psychiatrists (who both turned up in the same class one year) I found over and over again that the planetary pattern of the horoscope which I always drew up for the date, time and place of the start of the class was reflected in striking ways in the horoscopes of the students who turned up.

One year stands out in my memory. I began the class when there was a line-up of several planets in the dark, intense and powerful sign of Scorpio. The class composition that year was like no other before or since: all ten of the students had a preponderance of planets in Scorpio and/or strong emphases on the planet Pluto, ruler of the sign Scorpio.

I enjoyed teaching the class , an intense and powerful bunch of people who absorbed every word I said ( I think….!) but said very little. It was exhausting though. Like teaching a black hole!

On a totally contrasting note, there was another year where the dominant energies of the horoscope for that class were much, much lighter and “buzzier”.

The sun and other planets (as I recall) were concentrated in the signs of Virgo and Libra, with the planet Mercury dominant. This symbolism was expressed in a hardworking, charming and co-operative, and highly communicative  group of students who were very easy to work with.

Two students from that group, Doreen and Sheilagh ( just in case they happen to read this – I know they will not mind being mentioned! ) had such similar horoscopes that I asked them to sit beside each other, commenting that they would find a great deal in common. Nearly a quarter of a century later, they are still very good friends…..astrological twins in spirit…..

I hope this gives you a flavour of what it is like observing through the lens of astrological symbolism the shifting dance of interconnected energy comprising our small earthly world.

The great thing about astrology ‘beyond the sun signs‘ is its ability to illustrate – to those of us whose imaginative range is not constrained by reductionism – that there is not only meaning but also teleology embedded in our small lives as they unfold within the vast cosmic dance….
